Please visit the website: http://edtech2.boisestate.edu/johnfuller1/502/virtual_tour/start.html and answer the questions below:

1. What is the purpose of this activity?????
The purpose of this assignment is to relate past geologic events to present geologic hazards that currently exist here in California and how we can better prepare for them

2. Play the YouTube video. What hazard mitigation?
Preparing for Hazards in your area and taking the necessary precautions
3. In video, what are some of the benefits of hazard mitigation?
Prevent loss of life, damage and property loss

Click on “Earthquakes” at the top of this page and answer the questions below:

4. What happened in California on October 17th 1989? Describe the event and list any damage and casualties:
An magnitude 6.9 earthquake in the bay area that killed 63 people.

5. Look at the map. Do you live in an earthquake hazard area? What color “zone” do you live in?
No, I live in a green, yellowish zone that is relatively safe.

6. What are 2 ways we can prepare for an earthquake?
If you are outside during an earthquake, stay out side and get away from buildings. Remember, earthquakes don’t kill people, buildings do! Safety proof your home by making sure objects on shelves are secured and fastened down. Also make sure that pictures and objects on walls are strongly attached and secured.

Click on “Volcanoes” at the top of this page and answer the questions below:

7. What happened in California on May 22nd, 1915? Describe the event and list any damage and casualties:
Mount Lassen Erupted

8. Look at the volcanic map. Do you live near a volcanically active area that is prone to eruptions?
No, we live in a safe area that is not volcanically active.

9. In the event of a possible volcanic eruption, should you avoid and disregard evacuation warnings?
No, take them very seriously!!!

Click on “Tsunamis” at the top of this page and answer the questions below:

10. What happened in California on March 27th, 1964? Describe the event and list any damage and casualties:
A tsunami struck the coastline of Crescent City, killing 11 people.

11. Look at the map. Do you live in a tsunami hazard area? If not, do you have any family or friends who you live in a tsunami hazard area? If so, what would you tell them?
No, we live in a safe area away form the coastline. I would tell them if you see the ocean tidal line receding, head for high ground immediately!!!

12. When in doubt what is the one thing you should do during a tsunami?

Have an evacuation plan and a emergency kit available.

19. As California’s population grows, and spreads out, how do you think this will affect the amount of damage and loss of life in the event of future catastrophes?
I would anticipate more natural disaster’s and further loss of life.

20. Considering where you live, what hazards exist where you live? Which hazards do not exist?
We live in a medium fire hazard zone and high flood zone.
